The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for NYC in Maiden Address
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
