Tehran is ready to resume nuclear discussions with the United States as long as it is treated with "respect" and "honor", Iran's top diplomat has stated.

The Iranian diplomat declared only diplomacy produced results, and revealed recent overtures had been made by intermediaries to restart discussions with the American leadership. He said Iran did not have unreported enrichment locations, and Iran was not yet able to authorize the UN nuclear inspectorate to inspect bombed nuclear sites for security reasons.

Navigating a Challenging Route

The foreign minister is walking a complex course since Iran aims to avoid be seen to be operating from a situation of weakness, and he emphatically stated that Iran had emerged more resilient militarily and emotionally from the Israeli-US attack on its atomic facilities in June.

Iran's diplomats stated they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the enrichment issue in earlier negotiations, when it was decided an Iran-based consortium with American involvement could enrich uranium. Each party would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have persisted and the US could be assured that Iran's enrichment initiative was exclusively peaceful.

It had not been agreed in the negotiations that US nuclear scientists could function inside Iran, but that was a logical implication of the consortium proposal. Officials claimed on multiple occasions they had reached agreement with the US representative the American negotiator only for the deal to disintegrate due to "opponents in the US".

Existing Status
