Several Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta jet traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney experienced turbulence on Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.
Local paramedics said they treated a total of five people, and transported a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included spinal discomfort and headaches. Those affected spanned from their thirties and seventies.
It is the newest example of aircraft being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with experts indicating that climate change is a major factor.
There were nearly 250 travelers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the representative noted, adding that the plane arrived "safely" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on Friday morning.
Emergency responders reported they were alerted just a mere three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and response teams were standing by on the runway.
The reasons turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.
Last year, twenty-five passengers and crew were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "severe" rough air just a couple of hours into the long-haul flight, and had to make an precautionary landing.
In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a terrifying five seconds bout of severe turbulence. One passenger died and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and crashed back down.
In-flight turbulence is fairly routine while flying, and while occurrences of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.
