The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
