China Accuses United States of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Over Import Duty Ultimatum
Trump’s most recent warning to impose an extra complete levy on Chinese goods has been labeled a “prime illustration” of United States’ contradictory behavior, as stated by the China’s leadership.
A representative of the ministry further commented that the nation could implement its own unrevealed “retaliatory steps” if the American leader follows through on his threat, noting that the country was “fearless” of a potential commercial battle.
This past Friday, Trump responded at China’s decision to tighten its rules for exports of rare earth minerals, alleging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.
Furthermore, he vowed to pull out of a planned talks with Beijing’s head of state Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month.
His statements on Friday shook stock exchanges, with the benchmark US stock index closing down nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since last spring.
The president’s words revived fears of a trade war between the US and China.
In May, the two sides had agreed to eliminate high import duties on each other’s imports, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.
This left, United States levies on products from China subject to an added import tax compared with the start of the year, while American products entering the country face a 10% tariff.
Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the form of formal replies to journalist’s questions – mirrored language from the peak of the ongoing trade dispute.
Officials denounced US export restrictions on electronic components while supporting the country’s own restrictions on exports on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.
The spokesperson said that for “many years”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of state security, abused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” discriminatory practices against Beijing.
“Using” tariff threats is not the correct approach to deal with China,” the spokesperson stated.
“China’s position on a import duty dispute has always been steady: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”
The previous week, China announced it was tightening overseas sale regulations on key elements and further resources vital for high-technology production.
This was seen as a important measure, as the nation refines about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in goods such as solar panels and handheld devices.
New remarks from both governments are being seen by analysts as a strategy of enhancing bargaining power prior to future trade talks.
It is unclear whether a meeting between Trump and China’s leader, expected at a conference in Seoul later this month, will go ahead.
