Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in custody have been publicly known, including a senior hospital director who lost his life in detention after a third of a year in detention.

A prisoner held with the victim reported that he was taken to the yard by guards just prior to his death, visibly injured and naked from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Correctional authorities and military provided investigators with the total of deaths in detention, and minimal additional information such as the facility where they lost their lives, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Identification Challenges

For 21 instances, mainly detainees from Gaza, researchers were unable to match the minimal data provided by authorities to a death registered by advocacy bodies, via accounts from released detainees or coverage in the news outlets.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their family members’ fatalities also, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor detainees it is detaining.
